What does a Koh Phangan medical clinic treat ?

What tests and imaging are available on the island ?

Laboratory testing covers blood counts, organ function panels and testing for infections including dengue, malaria and influenza. Many results come back the same day and some the next, depending on which test it is and on the sample courier run. That timing matters clinically as well as conveniently: a dengue result that takes three days to arrive comes after the window in which it would have changed anything.

Digital X-ray is priced from 2,500 THB per body region, which covers the standard set of views for that area rather than a single image — an ankle, for instance, is taken from three angles as a matter of course. Laboratory work is quoted per test before it is run.

What should you bring, and how does a visit run ?

Bring your passport, your insurance policy, and any medication you take in its original packaging. There is no appointment system, so you arrive during opening hours, register at reception, and wait to be seen. The visit itself follows a predictable sequence, which is worth knowing if you are anxious about it:

1. Registration at reception with your passport and insurance details.
2. History and examination by the doctor, who will ask what happened and when.
3. Tests or imaging where needed, explained and quoted before they are run.
4. Diagnosis and treatment, with an explanation of what to watch for.
5. Written summary — ask for it, particularly if you are travelling onward.
6. Payment, with insurance raised at the start of the visit rather than here.

Where does the line fall ?

At anything needing an operating theatre, an inpatient bed, intensive care, advanced imaging or a specialist opinion. Orthopaedic fixation, appendicitis, significant head injuries, serious burns, complicated pregnancy and cardiac events are stabilised on Koh Phangan and referred to Koh Samui. What a fracture actually looks like here

Worth spelling out, because it is the commonest reason a visitor wonders whether the island is adequate. You come in, the limb is examined, an X-ray is taken on site, and the image answers the question. A simple fracture is immobilised and managed here with follow-up. A fracture needing surgical fixation is splinted, pain is controlled, and you travel with the images already taken — which means the receiving surgeon is looking at a picture rather than starting the diagnostic process again.

How long do results and treatment take ?

Most visits finish in one appointment. An X-ray is taken and read during the visit, a wound is cleaned, closed and dressed before you leave, and many laboratory results come back the same day with some following the next. Where a course of treatment is needed — antibiotics for an infected wound, or dressing changes over several days — you are given the schedule in writing along with what to watch for between visits.

What takes longer is anything referred onward, and that delay is transport rather than clinical. A CT scan means a boat to Koh Samui, which is why the assessment here matters: it establishes whether that journey is genuinely necessary before you spend a day making it.

What about diving and marine injuries ?

Koh Phangan sits within the same dive region as Koh Tao, and the presentations are the same: ear barotrauma, sinus squeeze, marine envenomation and decompression illness.
