Seeing a Doctor in Lamai, Koh Samui

Do you need an appointment to see a doctor in Lamai ?

No. There is no booking system and no referral requirement. Walk in during opening hours, register at reception, and wait to be seen. That applies to a week-long visitor, a month-long guest, a seasonal worker or a resident alike — nobody needs to be registered in advance and nobody is turned away for being a tourist.

The practical benefit is that deciding to be seen costs nothing but time. You never have to weigh whether a problem justifies the effort of booking, and that particular calculation is what leads people to leave an infected cut for another two days until it is a considerably larger problem.

Opening hours

The clinic is open daily from 09:00 to 24:00, weekends and public holidays included. The late closing matches how the island actually behaves rather than how a clinic would prefer to run: scooter accidents, marine stings, cuts, and the point at which a stomach upset stops being manageable all cluster in the evening. Arriving at eleven at night is ordinary here, not exceptional.

Where is the clinic in Lamai ?

At 124/231 Moo 3, Lamai Beach Road, Maret, Koh Samui, Surat Thani 84310. Lamai Beach Road is the main strip running behind the beach, so the clinic is within easy reach of most Lamai accommodation and a straightforward drive from Chaweng and the ring road.

If you are directing a taxi, Samui Boxing Stadium and Bondi Sports Bar are the landmarks to name — both are on the same stretch and every driver on the island knows them. Landmarks are used here far more reliably than addresses.

If you are too unwell to travel, a doctor or nurse can come to your hotel or villa instead. Koh Samui has a great deal of villa and resort accommodation spread well away from the main strips, and for severe vomiting, high fever, or an injury that makes moving painful, an in-room visit is usually the sensible option rather than an extravagance.

What should you bring ?

Four things, and only the first is strictly required.

1. Your passport, for registration. A phone photograph usually works if the original is in a hotel safe, but bring the document where you can.
2. Your insurance policy — the policy number and the insurer's emergency line. Photograph both and keep the images offline, because signal is not guaranteed at the moment you need them.
3. Any medication you currently take, in its original packaging rather than as a written list. Brand names vary between countries; the box shows the active ingredient and the dose.
4. Any previous medical certificate or notes, particularly if you are already partway through treatment elsewhere or arriving from another island.

What does a consultation in Lamai cost ?

The doctor's consultation fee starts from 800 THB at Lamai. That is the lowest of our three clinics — Koh Tao and Koh Phangan start from 1,000 THB — and it covers being seen and examined. Everything beyond the consultation is itemised separately, and the doctor tells you what something costs before doing it rather than afterwards.

Late in the evening an additional doctor's and nurse's fee applies, and reception will tell you what it comes to before you are seen. You can pay by cash or by credit or debit card — Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all three of our clinics. Digital X-ray, laboratory testing and an observation room are all on site at Lamai, so most diagnostic questions are answered without going anywhere else.

If you are claiming on travel insurance, say so at reception on arrival rather than when you pay. Some insurers can be billed directly and others require you to pay and reclaim, and settling that at the start of the visit is much easier than untangling it at the end. When should you come in rather than wait ?

Come in the same day for anything getting worse rather than settling. Visitors consistently underestimate how quickly a small wound becomes infected in warm, humid, salty conditions, and how unremarkable the early stages of something serious can look.

Same day, without debating it

• any wound that is deep, dirty, will not stop bleeding, or came from an animal bite
• any wound becoming more painful, red or swollen rather than less
• fever alongside a wound, or red streaks spreading from it
• ear pain that began during or after a dive
• any post-dive tingling, weakness, dizziness or unusual fatigue
• vomiting or diarrhoea severe enough that you cannot keep fluids down
• a rapidly spreading rash, or swelling of the face, lips or throat

Reasonable to leave until morning

• a small graze scabbing normally and not painful
• a mild sore throat with no fever
• a single episode of vomiting with fluids staying down afterwards

The general rule holds: if it is stopping you doing what you came here to do, it is worth being seen.

What if you are moving between islands ?

Say so at the first visit, because it changes how follow-up is arranged rather than merely making conversation. What happens during the visit ?

Reception registers you and takes your details. A doctor sees you, takes a history and examines you. If tests are needed they are explained and run before anything is charged. The doctor then explains the diagnosis, the treatment, and what to watch for, and you settle the bill on the way out.

Have your timeline straight before you go in, because it does more work than any other detail you can offer. When it started, what triggered it if anything, whether it is improving or worsening, and what you have already taken. If you have been diving, say so unprompted — depth, number of dives, how many days, and how long since the last one. That single detail reshapes the assessment of headaches, joint pain, dizziness, fatigue and ear complaints more than travellers expect.

Ask for a written summary before you leave, particularly if you are travelling onward.
